The Russians attacked foreign vessels at sea; the Ukrainian Navy evacuated the people on board: there has been one casualty
This has been reported by the Ukrainian Navy’s press office and the Ukrainian Sea Ports Authority.
It is known that the dry cargo vessel was sailing under the Panamanian flag, although it is owned by Turkey. After being struck by a drone, a fire broke out on board and the vessel sustained significant damage.
The Ukrainian Navy began rescuing the ship’s crew, but one person did not survive.
“Unfortunately, a crew member – a 58-year-old cook – was killed. We extend our sincere condolences to his family and loved ones. The other eight seafarers were evacuated onto a life raft,” the USPA said.
It is known that civilian vessels flying the flags of Palau and Belize were also damaged as a result of the Russian attack. There were no casualties, and the vessels continued on their way.
“Targeted strikes against the civilian merchant fleet and maritime infrastructure constitute a gross violation of international law and further evidence that Russia is deliberately jeopardising the safety of international shipping,” the Ukrainian Seaports Authority stated.
