Piotr Fogler, a former member of the Polish Sejm, has declined his state honour — the ‘Gold Cross of Merit’. He stated that he was returning the award in protest against Polish President Karol Nawrocki’s decision regarding Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s order

Fogler wrote about this on social media.

Why Fogler returned the award

The former Polish MP stated that his decision was specifically linked to the revocation of the order by the President of Ukraine. He emphasised that this move was not directed against the president who had originally awarded him the honour, but was a protest against the actions of Poland’s current leadership.

“I am symbolically returning my award in protest against the decision to revoke the order awarded by the President of Ukraine, who is fighting for Ukraine,” Fogler wrote.

He also sharply criticised Karol Nawrocki, stating that he did not agree with his political decisions.

Background

Earlier, Polish President Karol Nawrocki decided to strip Volodymyr Zelenskyy of the Order of the White Eagle due to the situation regarding the name of one of the Ukrainian military units, which was named in honour of the UPA. Following this, a number of Ukrainian politicians and officials announced that they were returning their Polish honours.
