The US State Department has identified a turning point on the front line and stated that Ukraine is winning the war
US Deputy Secretary of State Jeremy Levin made this statement during preparations for the Conference on the Reconstruction of Ukraine in Gdańsk, according to the Kyiv Post.
He said there had been a marked turning point on the battlefield. Whereas previously Russia had largely held the initiative, the situation is now shifting in Ukraine’s favour.
“We are now in a situation where Ukraine is winning this war,” the US official said.
Levin said that the dynamics of the conflict had reversed: Ukrainian troops are on the offensive, whilst Russian forces are effectively biding their time until winter.
In Washington, it is believed that strikes on Russian fuel and military infrastructure are playing a key role in this. Attacks by Ukrainian drones on oil depots, refineries and logistics facilities are forcing the Kremlin to divert resources away from the front line and towards defending its own territory.
The fuel situation has become particularly telling. Following a series of Ukrainian strikes, Moscow’s largest oil refinery, which supplies the Russian capital with fuel, may be out of action for at least half a year. Meanwhile, shortages of petrol and diesel are already being reported in dozens of Russian regions.
The US has also hinted that sanctions against Russia could be tightened. According to Levin, Washington is considering the possibility of tightening restrictions on the Russian oil industry and will coordinate such measures with its European partners.
These measures will be coordinated with European partners, Levin noted.
And whilst in recent years Western officials have typically spoken of the need to help Ukraine secure victory in the future, the rhetoric is now shifting: the State Department believes that the turning point has already arrived, and the allies’ main task is not to lose momentum and to help Ukraine consolidate the advantage it has gained.
