Trump's Trade War: New Tariffs Against the EU
According to Reuters, the announcement was made on his social network Truth Social.
Trump announced that starting August 1, the USA will impose a 30% tariff on imports from the European Union and Mexico.
He added that this tariff rate is "much lower than what is needed to eliminate the trade deficit we have with the EU," and that European companies will not need to pay it if they establish production in the USA.
A few days earlier, the American president stated that in August he would apply a 35% duty to Canadian imports into the USA, and also that he plans to impose tariffs of 15-20% on other trading partners.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen responded cautiously to the US president's statement about 30% tariffs on EU imports. She noted that the tariff rate announced by Donald Trump for European imports would "hit entrepreneurs, consumers, and patients on both sides of the Atlantic."
"We will continue to work on (trade) agreements until August 1. At the same time, we are ready to defend the interests of the EU with proportionate countermeasures," she wrote.
The EU previously proposed that the USA establish a universal tariff of 10% on European goods with exemptions for certain sectors.
