Trump signed a paper copy of the memorandum between the US and Iran in Versailles
US President Donald Trump signed a hard copy of the memorandum of understanding between the United States and Iran whilst in France, according to The Hill.
A video of the signing was posted on social media platform X by Dan Scavino, Deputy Chief of Staff at the White House. In the footage, Trump is seen signing the memorandum ahead of a dinner hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron at the Palace of Versailles following the G7 summit. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio was standing beside them.
“Just before tonight’s dinner in Versailles, France… President Donald Trump signed a memorandum of understanding on Iran after receiving it from Secretary of State Rubio,” wrote Dan Scavino.
He also described it as “a rather significant moment in history”.
After dinner, Donald Trump confirmed to journalists that he had personally signed the document.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghai told Iranian state media that President Masoud Pezeshkian had signed the memorandum on behalf of Iran.
Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also confirmed that the document had been signed.
“It will come into force immediately, and as a first step, the Islamic Republic of Iran will immediately open the Strait of Hormuz, whilst the United States of America will immediately lift the naval blockade,” Shehbaz Sharif wrote on social media platform X.
According to him, the signing of the agreement at the highest level demonstrates both sides’ commitment to a diplomatic resolution of the conflict.
Earlier, Donald Trump and Shehbaz Sharif announced that a peace agreement had been reached between the US and Iran, providing for the immediate and indefinite cessation of military operations. The relevant memorandum was signed electronically.
The ceremony for the physical signing of the document is scheduled for 19 June in Geneva, Switzerland.
