A soldier has been arrested in Dnipro for assaulting a fellow soldier during a drill
Law enforcement officers have detained a soldier suspected of assaulting a fellow soldier in the Dnipropetrovsk region. According to the State Bureau of Investigations, he was detained in Kropyvnytskyi, after which he was taken to Dnipro and handed over to investigators.
According to the investigation, the incident occurred during a drill. The soldier called one of his comrades out of the ranks and began beating him, presumably due to personal animosity. The report states that the attacker attempted to impose his own rules within the unit and staged a show of force.
The victim lost consciousness. After that, according to the investigation, his hands were tied with straps.
A video of the incident was posted online. After the beating, the soldier left the unit’s base and went into hiding for several days.
Oleg Magola, head of the Dnipro Specialised Prosecutor’s Office for Defence in the Eastern Region, stated that the suspect’s actions have been classified under Part 2 of Article 406 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, which carries a sentence of up to five years’ imprisonment.
Furthermore, in connection with his unauthorised absence from his post, charges have been brought under Article 408 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine regarding desertion, which carries a sentence of up to 12 years’ imprisonment. Additionally, the suspect’s actions are deemed to constitute torture, for which a sentence of up to six years’ imprisonment is prescribed.
Following the emergence of a video showing the beating of a serviceman from the 155th Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the State Bureau of Investigations opened criminal proceedings. The investigation is being conducted by SBI investigators in Poltava.
According to the prosecutor’s office, the victim was admitted to a hospital in the Dnipropetrovsk region, where he received medical treatment. The Military Law Enforcement Service reported that his condition is assessed as satisfactory, and his relatives have been informed of the incident.
The State Bureau of Investigations noted that any manifestations of violence in the military are unacceptable, and all such cases will be met with an appropriate response from law enforcement.
