A stray bullet killed a baby in a pram during a shooting in Brooklyn
This is according to the Associated Press, citing the New York Police Department.
The shooting took place on 1 April at around 1.20 pm. According to the police, two men on a moped approached a group of people on the pavement in Brooklyn, after which the passenger opened fire, firing at least two shots. At that moment, a seven-month-old baby was in a pram. The infant died from the injuries. According to official reports, no other injuries from the shooting were recorded.
After the attack, the moped left the scene but crashed into an oncoming car two blocks away. One of the men was injured in the crash and taken to hospital, where he was taken into custody in connection with another investigation. The second man fled, and as of Wednesday, the search for him was ongoing.
What is known about the investigation
New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tish stated that investigators had traced the moped’s route using CCTV cameras in the area. New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani, commenting on the tragedy at the scene, described the child’s death as a blow to the city and emphasised that it was yet another reminder of the need to reduce levels of gun violence.
The Associated Press also notes that the child’s death occurred against a backdrop of an overall decline in violent crime in New York. According to the NYPD, 52 homicides had been recorded in the city by the end of March 2026, which is 29% fewer than during the same period last year.
As a reminder, the Lviv Regional Police have detained a suspect in the attack on a TCC serviceman. He turned out to be an inspector with Lviv Customs.
