Light aircraft crashes in central Mexico, killing at least seven people
A small plane crashed in central Mexico, killing at least seven people. This was announced by the coordinator of civil defence in Mexico City, Adrian Hernandez. It is reported by The Public with reference to Apnews.
The plane crash occurred in the San Mateo Atenco industrial zone, about five kilometres from Toluca Airport and 50 kilometres west of Mexico City. The aircraft was travelling from the Pacific coast resort of Acapulco.
According to the official, there were eight passengers and two crew members on board the private jet. As of a few hours after the tragedy, rescuers had found the bodies of seven people.
It has been preliminarily established that the pilots tried to make an emergency landing on a football field. The plane hit the metal roof of a nearby business, which caused a large-scale fire. Investigators are looking into the cause of the accident.
San Mateo Atenco Mayor Ana Muñiz said that about 130 people were evacuated from the danger zone due to the fire. Emergency services were working at the scene, and the fire was contained.
