In Kyiv, the sale of counterfeit 100-dollar bills at half price was exposed.
In Kyiv, police officers exposed a group of counterfeit US dollar dealers who were selling fake currency at a reduced price. This was reported on 30 January by the Internal Security Department of the National Police of Ukraine.
According to the investigation, two 23-year-old men, residents of Kyiv and the capital region, were involved in the illegal activity. They sold counterfeit 100-dollar bills for 50 dollars each. To document the crime, law enforcement officers conducted an undercover purchase, after which the seized funds were sent for expert examination.
The examination confirmed that the purchased dollars were counterfeit. At the same time, according to the experts' conclusions, the counterfeits were of high quality and, based on their external characteristics, were almost indistinguishable from genuine banknotes during visual inspection and verification with a banknote detector.
During an attempt to sell another batch of counterfeit currency worth $100,000, one of the suspects was detained in accordance with procedural rules. The operation was carried out by employees of the DVB together with detectives from the Economic Security Bureau of Ukraine, with the support of special police forces.
Currently, both men have been notified of suspicion under parts one and two of Article 199 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, which provides for liability for the manufacture and sale of counterfeit money. The article provides for up to 10 years' imprisonment with confiscation of property.
The investigation is ongoing. Law enforcement officers are establishing the possible involvement of other persons in the criminal scheme and the channels through which the counterfeit currency entered the Ukrainian currency market. The Kyiv City Prosecutor's Office is conducting the proceedings in the case.
