The ‘Kyivska Rus’ secondary school in Kyiv is being closed due to the building’s unsafe condition
In Kyiv, the ‘Kyivska Rus’ secondary school, which opened around 13 years ago, has been deemed unsafe for use. The decision was taken by the Commission on Technogenic and Environmental Safety and Emergencies, which ordered the immediate suspension of the school’s operations. This was reported by TSN.ua.
The building in question is located at 2-B Borysa Hmyri Street in the Darnytskyi district of the capital. The reason for this was serious technical problems identified during a comprehensive inspection.
According to Oleksandr Kovtunov, head of the Darnytskyi District State Administration, specialists from the state-owned enterprise ‘Research Institute of Construction Production’ identified a number of critical defects. In particular, these include systemic cracks in the walls, significant sagging of floor slabs exceeding permissible standards, insufficient structural strength, constant water ingress into the foundations, and damage to utility networks.
As the official noted, the current condition of the building already poses a potential risk of a man-made emergency. He emphasised that the safety of children is a priority and requires immediate action.
The report on the safety concerns regarding the new school has caused a stir among local residents. On social media, users are actively discussing the situation, expressing scepticism about the findings of the expert assessment and suggesting possible malpractice.
In particular, some residents believe the cause may be poor-quality construction, whilst others suspect hidden interests linked to the renovation or change of ownership of the school. Comments also highlight that significantly older schools are operating in Kyiv which are not classified as unsafe, despite their condition.
Despite the decision to suspend operations, as of the weekend, some clubs were still operating on the school premises. In particular, the rhythmic gymnastics section was holding classes, as it had not yet received official notification of a full closure at that time.
