Russia has made it clear that it does not support Ukraine’s proposal for an Easter truce.

On Tuesday, 31 March 2026, Russian Presidential Spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated that “Zelenskyy must take responsibility and make a decision to ensure that Russia and Ukraine reach a peace agreement, rather than a ceasefire”.

According to the Kremlin, “Russian troops are advancing along the entire front line, so Kyiv desperately needs a ceasefire.”

The day before, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine was ready for a ceasefire over Easter and an energy truce.

“We are ready for a ceasefire over the Easter holidays. In my view, to be honest, decent people who respect life talk about a ceasefire and an end to the war for good, not just for a few days. But, of course, we are ready for any compromises, except those involving our dignity and sovereignty,” said the head of state.

According to Zelenskyy, Ukraine supports any format of a ceasefire and, in general, an end to the war, “but only if the state’s dignity and independence are not compromised”.

This year, Orthodox Christians celebrate Easter on 12 April.
