Latvia has recorded the most severe frosts in the last 13 years
Latvia has recorded its lowest air temperatures since February 2012. On Saturday morning, the thermometer at the Daugavpils weather station dropped to minus 32 degrees, which was the coldest temperature in the country in the last 13 years. This was reported by the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre, according to Delfi.
The weather station in Daugavpils is located near the Rugeli reservoir, while in most areas of the city the temperature was slightly higher. According to Latvijas Valsts ceļi, the temperature on the A6 motorway near Daugavpils Airport dropped to minus 28 degrees at night and in the morning, which was the lowest reading recorded by road sensors.
The second lowest temperature in the morning was minus 28 degrees and was recorded in Stalgene, where the Jelgava weather station is located. In most of Latvia, the air temperature ranged from minus 16 to minus 26 degrees. Milder weather was observed in some areas of Kurzeme, in particular in Kolka, where the temperature did not fall below minus 7 degrees.
In the centre of Riga, it was around minus 16 degrees early in the morning, minus 19 at the airport, and in the suburbs of the capital, the temperature dropped to minus 25 degrees in some places. Many areas of Vidzeme and Latgale were cloudy, with light snowfall in some places, fog and drizzle.
The absolute cold record for 31 January and for January in general in Latvia is minus 42.7 degrees. It was recorded in 1956, also in Daugavpils. Forecasters predict that on Sunday night and Monday, it will get even colder in parts of the country, and new temperature records may be set at the beginning of the week.
