Mass accidents in housing and utilities sector recorded in Russian regions
In Russia, over the past month, one in seven regions has faced critical accidents in the housing and utilities sector. This was reported by the Centre for Countering Disinformation.
According to Russian media, since the beginning of January 2026, large-scale failures in heating, water supply and power systems have been recorded in at least 12 settlements, including cities with a population of over one million. During the New Year holidays, the number of accidents on peak days reached 26 per day, and in just the first eight days of the year, there were more than 200 serious incidents.
The official authorities explain the situation as "abnormal weather conditions" or "local technical failures". At the same time, the Centre for Countering Disinformation notes that the real reason is the systematic and prolonged deterioration of infrastructure. As an example, they cite the Murmansk region, where tens of thousands of people were left without electricity for three days due to the collapse of Soviet-era power poles.
The Centre emphasises that the collapse of utilities in Russian regions is increasingly demonstrating the consequences of the Kremlin's policies. Instead of modernising critical infrastructure for its own population, resources are being directed towards waging war and destroying infrastructure in Ukraine.
