Ukraine will help the US counter Iranian drones in the Middle East
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has stated that Ukraine will assist the United States in countering Iranian drones in the Middle East. He wrote about this on social media platform X.
According to Zelensky, Ukraine has received a request from the US for support in defending against Shahed drones.
"We have received a request from the United States for specific support to defend against Shahed drones in the Middle East region," he wrote.
The president noted that he had instructed that the necessary resources be provided and that Ukrainian specialists be present.
"I have given instructions to provide the necessary means and ensure the presence of Ukrainian specialists who can guarantee the necessary security," Zelensky added.
According to a source familiar with the situation, the US has requested assistance to protect its bases and military personnel in some countries in the region.
It is expected that Ukrainian specialists will be able to start work in the coming days.
After the start of a large-scale campaign of US and Israeli airstrikes on Iran on 28 February, Tehran deployed hundreds of drones against American targets in neighbouring countries.
During the war with Russia, Ukraine developed effective methods of combating Iranian-made Shahed drones, which Russia has been actively using throughout the four years of war.
US President Donald Trump said in a telephone interview with Reuters that he was ready to accept help from any country. He responded to a question about Ukraine's offer of support in countering Iranian drones.
Earlier this week, Zelensky also expressed concern that the war against Iran could affect Western arms supplies to Ukraine if the conflict is prolonged and intense.
In particular, he noted that Ukraine needs air defence systems to protect itself from Russian missiles.
In recent months, Ukraine has already faced a shortage of American-made Patriot systems, which are the only effective weapon for intercepting Russian ballistic missiles.
On Tuesday, Zelensky also said that Ukraine is open to a possible exchange of interceptor drones for missiles for air defence systems with partners in the Middle East who have their own Patriot stocks.
