Ukraine is looking for Soviet thermal power plants and thermal power stations in Eastern Europe to rebuild its energy system
Ukraine continues to seek opportunities for the rapid restoration of damaged combined heat and power plants and thermal power plants. This was stated by First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy Denys Shmyhal during question time to the government in the Verkhovna Rada.
According to him, Ukrainian energy companies, together with their partners, are searching for old Soviet-type combined heat and power plants and power plants in Eastern European countries. After identifying such facilities, specialists assess and inventory the equipment and, if possible, dismantle it in whole blocks for further use in Ukraine.
The minister explained that the manufacture of new equipment takes 4 to 6 months, so the use of existing power units significantly reduces the time required for restoration. The possibility of transferring equipment from a number of such facilities in Europe is currently being explored.
Shmyhal also said that in preparation for the next heating season, a reserve of equipment that could be destroyed by Russian attacks will be formed. The purchases are supported by the Ukrainian Energy Support Fund, which has accumulated €1.8 billion in contributions during its operation.
The government expects that the creation of a strategic reserve and the involvement of equipment from Eastern Europe will increase the resilience of the energy system in the face of regular attacks on infrastructure.
