Ukraine reports a strike on Russia's Yaroslavl refinery, production halted
Ukrainian defence forces have struck at the Yaroslavl oil refinery in Russia, after which the company suspended production. This was reported by Reuters, citing the Ukrainian military and industry sources.
The General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces said that the Defence Forces hit the facilities of the Slavneft YANOS refinery in the Yaroslavl region, located about 250 kilometres northeast of Moscow. Explosions and a large-scale fire were reported at the facility, and the extent of the damage is being assessed.
According to industry sources, Ukrainian drones damaged the primary oil refining unit and a railway overpass for product shipment. As a result, the refinery's operations were completely shut down. The Yaroslavl refinery is the fourth largest in Russia and has a capacity of about 300,000 barrels per day, or 15 million tonnes of oil per year.
The CDU 4 unit, which accounts for about a third of the refinery's total throughput, was particularly damaged. Last year, the plant produced 2.6 million tonnes of petrol, 4 million tonnes of diesel and 4.7 million tonnes of fuel oil.
Reuters notes that the strikes on energy infrastructure have become mutual amid a lack of a breakthrough in talks to end the war, which has been going on for almost four years. Representatives of the plant did not provide official comment.
