The government has approved a programme to develop biomethane production by 2035
This was announced by Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal.
The programme provides for the construction of new biomethane plants, the modernisation of existing biogas facilities, the creation of investment incentives for businesses, and deregulation regarding the connection of biomethane producers to gas transmission and distribution networks.
Ukraine’s goal is to produce 1 billion cubic metres of biomethane per year by 2030 and to increase this volume to 2.1 billion cubic metres by 2035.
The government has also approved an action plan for implementing the programme, with the Ministry of Energy as the lead implementing body. According to Shmyhal, as early as this year Ukraine could gain access to the EU’s database on renewable fuels, initiate the conclusion of an agreement with the European Union on the mutual recognition of guarantees of origin for biomethane, and approve rules for determining the quality of natural gas.
