In 2026, work will begin in Europe on developing a replacement for the Tomahawk missiles
This is reported by the Financial Times.
The German defence group has announced that its new joint venture with the Dutch defence start-up Destinus, the creation of which was announced last month, will begin production at the end of this year or in early 2027.
Rheinmetall Destinus Strike Systems will produce cruise missiles as well as ballistic missile systems. The aim is to meet the needs of Germany and international customers.
Destinus, founded in 2021, announced last month that it had successfully tested its new long-range strike system, the Ruta Block 2.
The missile’s stated range is 700 km or more, which is significantly less than the range of systems such as the US land- and sea-based Tomahawk cruise missiles, which the US was due to deploy in Germany this year.
However, US President Donald Trump scrapped this plan, which was intended to give Europe the capability to strike targets within Russia. Washington’s sudden U-turn forced Berlin and other European capitals to step up their search for interim solutions and accelerate the development of their own high-precision long-range strike systems.
The new joint venture will mark Rheinmetall’s first step into cruise missile production and bring the company into a market currently dominated by the pan-European group MBDA.
