Power cuts have led to a reduction in fertiliser production in Ukraine
This was revealed by Taras Vysotsky, Deputy Minister of Economic Development, Trade and Agriculture, in an interview with hromadske.
According to Vysotsky, prior to the full-scale war, Ukraine was effectively self-sufficient in fertiliser production, meeting domestic demand, but after 2022, some enterprises remained in the occupied territories, while the rest faced problems such as power cuts, restrictions on the handling of explosive substances and a decline in imports.
This led to fertiliser production in 2025 amounting to around 1.95 million tonnes, or just 37% of requirements. The situation is particularly critical for nitrogen fertilisers, production of which has fallen by almost half compared to 2021.
The fertiliser shortage is affecting the harvest: yields could fall by 20%, or by around 12 million tonnes.
At the same time, the sector is gradually adapting, and the government is attempting to stimulate domestic production by preparing a mechanism for partial compensation of the cost of domestic fertilisers for farmers.
