A 13-year-old girl who went missing in Arizona has been found alive 32 years later
Christina Marie Plante went missing on 15 May 1994 in Star Valley, a small mountain community approximately 95 miles north-east of Phoenix. She was 13 years old at the time of her disappearance. According to police, she was last seen walking to the stable where she kept her horse, after which she vanished without a trace.
At the time, law enforcement officials stated that the disappearance had occurred under suspicious circumstances. On Wednesday, the Gila County Sheriff’s Office announced that 44-year-old Plante had been found alive, but no details of how this happened were disclosed “out of respect for her privacy”. Investigators have not yet revealed the reason for her disappearance either.
Following the girl’s disappearance, a large-scale search was conducted in Arizona, but it proved fruitless. Investigators interviewed many people and, as noted in the report, exhausted all investigative avenues available at the time, yet found no concrete leads. Consequently, the case reached a dead end, although it was never officially closed and was periodically revisited by the Cold Case Unit.
In old newspaper reports, this story was described as a possible abduction by a stranger. Indeed, in an article in The Morning Call dated 23 October 1994, the Plante case was presented precisely in this context. At the same time, the sheriff’s office did not report any arrests following the discovery of the case.
The article also mentions that in 1995, in an article in the Morning Sentinel about missing children, Christine was described as a girl with a scar on her chest following heart surgery. At the time, it was emphasised that she was considered a child who might be in danger, and a call was made for anyone with information about her disappearance to come forward.
Plante remained on the national missing children database for years. According to the sheriff’s office, the investigation received a new impetus after a specialist unit reviewed her case again. The office noted that the breakthrough was achieved thanks to technological advances, modern investigative methods and a detailed re-analysis of the evidence. Following this, investigators confirmed her identity and officially closed her missing persons case.
Law enforcement officials emphasised that they would not disclose further information at this stage, citing respect for Christina Plante’s privacy and well-being.
