15 June 2026: which church holiday is it and what should you avoid doing?
On Monday, 15 June 2026, Orthodox Christians following the new church calendar commemorate the Holy Prophet Amos and the Venerable Jerome of Stridon.
Traditionally, this day was considered a special time for gathering medicinal plants. At the same time, there were also warnings: on 15 June, people were advised to be careful near bodies of water, not to go into the forest alone, and to be careful with fire.
Who was the Prophet Amos?
The Prophet Amos is one of the twelve minor prophets of the Old Testament. He came from Tekoa – a small settlement in Judea, situated near desert areas.
Amos was not a priest and did not belong to any prophetic schools. According to tradition, he was a shepherd and tended sycamore trees, the fruit of which was used as food for the poorer sections of the population.
It is precisely Amos’s humble origins that are often cited as a key feature of his ministry. He did not act as a court prophet or a religious official, but as a man of the people who spoke of justice, responsibility and spiritual integrity.
His sermons coincided with a period of outward prosperity, behind which lay social inequality, corruption and a perfunctory attitude towards faith. Because of this, Amos’s words aroused the displeasure of the religious and political elite.
Who was Jerome of Stridon
On 15 June 2026, we also commemorate the Venerable Jerome of Stridon.
Jerome was born around 347 in the town of Stridon, which was situated on the border of the Roman Empire. He came from a wealthy Christian family and received a thorough education.
From an early age, Jerome showed a talent for languages and literature. He studied in Rome, knew Latin and Greek, and later also mastered Hebrew.
Following a period of spiritual searching, Jerome chose the path of asceticism. He lived in the Syrian desert, studied the Holy Scriptures, and later became a priest and theologian.
Jerome’s most famous work was the Vulgate – a Latin translation of the Bible, which held particular significance for the Western Church for centuries.
