Latvia commemorates the victims of Soviet terror: Ukraine joins in the tribute
This was reported by the publication "Western Information Front".
A commemorative ceremony took place in Riga at the “History of Touch” Memorial to the Victims of Soviet Occupation on Town Hall Square. The event was attended by Latvian President Edgars Rinkēvičs, representatives of the government, the Saeima, the diplomatic corps and the public. Ukraine was represented at the ceremony by the Embassy of Ukraine in the Republic of Latvia.
What happened on 14 June 1941
On this day, the Soviet regime launched one of the largest waves of deportations in Latvia. Thousands of people were forcibly deported to remote regions of the USSR. Among the victims of the repression were families, members of the intelligentsia and people whom the Soviet authorities considered a threat to the occupation regime. The Day of Remembrance for the Victims of Communist Terror serves as an annual reminder of the crimes of the Soviet system and the consequences of the occupation.
Ukraine recalled its shared experience with Latvia
The embassy noted that this date holds particular significance for Ukrainians as well, as both nations have endured repression, deportations and attempts to destroy their national identity. Ukrainian diplomats also emphasised that Russia continues its aggression against Ukraine today and is carrying out forced deportations of Ukrainian citizens, including children. Ukraine expressed solidarity with the Latvian people and thanked Latvia for its support in the fight against Russian aggression.
