16 квітня 2026: яке релігійне свято відзначають, традиції та молитва
On 16 April 2026, the Orthodox Church commemorates the holy martyrs Agatha, Irene and Chionia. According to church tradition, they were sisters who lived near Aquileia during the reign of Emperor Diocletian; they were orphaned at an early age and dedicated their lives to God. During the persecution of Christians, they refused to renounce their faith, for which they were executed. Agatha and Chionia died in the flames, whilst Irene was later killed by an arrow.
On this day, Bright Week following Easter continues, and 16 April falls on Bright Thursday. Easter services continue in churches during this period, and the day itself is part of the Easter cycle of church feasts. The calendar also lists other commemorations – the martyr Leonid and the holy martyrs Chariesa, Nika, Galina, Kalis, Nunekhia, Vasilisa, Theodora, Irina and others, as well as the Ilyinsky-Chernigov Icon of the Mother of God.
In folk tradition, this day was associated with observing nature and the weather. Among the omens mentioned in calendar publications are clear and warm weather on Maundy Thursday as a sign of a sunny and bountiful summer, thunder as a harbinger of a good grain harvest, and the early blossoming of birch trees as a sign of a potentially dry summer.
Separately, in folk beliefs, this day was associated with spring water and riverbanks, as well as with dreams, to which special significance was attributed during the Easter period. At the same time, in ecclesiastical tradition, the main focus of the day remains the commemoration of the martyrs and the joy of Holy Week following Christ’s Resurrection.
Prayers on this day may be addressed both to the risen Christ and to the holy martyrs Agatha, Irene and Chionia – with requests for the strengthening of faith, peace in the heart, protection of loved ones and spiritual endurance. During the Easter period, the Easter hymn “Christ is risen from the dead, by death He has conquered death...” is also traditionally sung.
As reported by ThePublic, Trinity Sunday, or the Feast of the Holy Trinity, is one of the twelve movable feasts, so its date changes every year. In 2026, Orthodox Ukrainians will celebrate Trinity Sunday on 31 May – the 50th day after Easter.
