3 April 2026: which church holiday is it and what you should definitely do at home
3 April in the Orthodox calendar marks the commemoration of the Venerable Confessor Nikita, abbot of the Midiki Monastery. He is regarded as one of the holy confessors, whose spiritual feat serves as an example of steadfastness in faith and piety.
The life of the Venerable Nikita was closely linked to the Midiki Monastery, renowned for its strict monastic discipline, asceticism and spiritual depth. He lived during a time of persecution of Christians, devoting himself to prayer, fasting and the spiritual guidance of the brethren, and his ministry was remembered for its wisdom and steadfastness.
On this same day, believers venerate the icon of the Mother of God ‘The Unfading Flower’. This image has long been regarded as a symbol of spiritual renewal, purity, support in difficult times and the eternal beauty of the soul.
People pray before the icon for peace in the family, protection of the home from misfortune, peace of mind, healing from grief and a happy married life. Traditionally, young women ask the Mother of God for a good marriage, whilst married women pray for harmony and prosperity in the home. That is why, on 3 April, people were advised to prioritise the home atmosphere, avoid arguments and maintain peace within the family.
What not to do and what are the day’s superstitions
According to folk beliefs, on this day one should not make a racket on the banks of a river or lake, as this may anger the water spirit who guards the water. If a person was going fishing, they were advised to leave a small offering in the water before setting off – a little bread, porridge or chicken gizzards. This custom was seen as a sign of respect for the water element and a good omen for a successful catch.
Among the weather omens for 3 April, several of the most common were mentioned. If it is warm on this day, spring will be early and generally mild. Calm and clear weather portends a good harvest, whilst a cloudy and windy day is considered a sign of a cool summer.
As a reminder, the experimental X-59 QueSST has resumed flights following a failed test, which had to be aborted due to a false warning in the cockpit. The NASA and Lockheed Martin project aims to demonstrate whether supersonic flights over land can be made significantly quieter.
