83 cases of carbon monoxide poisoning in a month: 55 children among the victims
In February 2026, 83 cases of carbon monoxide poisoning were recorded in Ukraine. These incidents affected 150 people, including 55 children. Twenty-three people died. This was reported by the State Emergency Service of Ukraine (SES).
One of the most high-profile cases occurred in Volyn. Five people, including three children, were poisoned by carbon monoxide in a private house. All the victims were hospitalised. According to preliminary data, the cause could have been malfunctions in the heating equipment and ventilation system.
The SES emphasises that carbon monoxide is odourless and colourless, so people may not feel the threat. Children are particularly vulnerable to poisoning.
Rescuers urge people to regularly check the condition of stoves and gas equipment, not to block ventilation ducts, not to use generators indoors, and to install carbon monoxide detectors.
If you experience the first symptoms — dizziness, weakness, nausea or drowsiness — you should immediately go out into the fresh air and call 101 or 103 for help.
