The Russians have once again used depleted uranium munitions in their attacks on Ukraine — SBU
This is stated in a report by the security services.
According to the investigation, dangerous components were found in ‘Geran-2’ attack drones, which were used to shell the region between April and June 2026. The SBU claims that the Russians are using R-60M missiles in these drones, which have been adapted for launch from UAVs.
During an inspection of the impact sites, experts recorded levels 80 times higher than the natural background radiation, whilst the gamma radiation levels of individual fragments reached 8.3–24 µSv/h, compared with the permissible limit of 0.3 µSv/h.
Analysis showed that the warheads contained isotopes of uranium-235 and uranium-238. The SBU has opened criminal proceedings under the article on war crimes.
Depleted uranium is used in armour-piercing shells. The cores of such shells easily penetrate heavy armour and ignite upon impact. It is also sometimes used in aviation — as a counterweight for balancing.
As a reminder, in April 2026, the Russians attacked the Sumy region with drones whose warheads contained uranium.
