A blogger from Vinnytsia has been sentenced to three years in prison for insulting members of the armed forces and fraud at a recruitment event for the Ukrainian Armed Forces
This has been reported by the Vinnytsia City Court.
The court states that Shavlyuk, who founded and ran the news agency, disseminated information that “was intended to discredit the mobilisation measures of the Territorial Defence Command and the Joint Forces Operation”, and also insulted military personnel.
“Yes, the suspect committed unlawful acts to foster a negative attitude towards military personnel in society during a critical period,” the court’s statement reads.
Furthermore, the blogger announced a fundraising campaign for the Armed Forces, but the court stated that he used these funds for his own purposes.
Throughout the investigation, Shavlyuk himself denied any wrongdoing, whilst the defence emphasised signs of political persecution and challenged the conduct of the investigation.
The court examined written and video evidence, questioned the victims and witnesses, as well as a linguistic expert, and found Shavlyuk guilty under Parts 1 and 2 of Article 190 and Part 2 of Article 435-1 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.
Oleksandr Shavliuk was detained back in November 2024. At that time, the Security Service of Ukraine informed him that he was suspected of offences under Part 1 of Article 114-1 and Parts 1 and 2 of Article 190 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.
