A fireworks factory has exploded in Malta: homes and vehicles have been damaged, and there are casualties
This was reported by the local publication MaltaToday.
The incident occurred at around 6.30 am, with at least two people known to have been injured. They were taken to the local Our Lady of Mount Carmel Hospital.
“The victims are two men aged 67 and 47. At the time of the explosion, they were in fields near the factory. Both have minor injuries and are in shock,” journalists report, citing police sources.
It is known that the explosion was followed by a series of smaller detonations. A thick column of smoke rose into the sky, visible from various parts of the island. The surrounding infrastructure suffered significant damage as a result of the incident. Fortunately, there were no workers on the factory premises at the time of the explosion.
According to emergency services and journalists, residential buildings were damaged; in many buildings near the epicentre of the explosion, windows were blown out and roofs and facades were damaged. Vehicles parked near the factory were also damaged.
The blast wave also affected commercial and industrial buildings located within the affected area.
However, according to preliminary reports from rescue workers, there were no fatalities as a result of the incident. Firefighters, ambulance crews and the police are continuing to work at the scene. The area around the destroyed factory is currently cordoned off due to the risk of further explosions, and residents of neighbouring areas have been evacuated. Law enforcement agencies are establishing the exact causes and circumstances that led to the fire at the factory.
Prime Minister Robert Abela said he sympathised with those affected and added that officials and government staff had been immediately dispatched to the scene to provide assistance.
