A lack of green spaces and dense development: which areas of Kyiv are the hottest?
Experts at LUN have created a heat map of Kyiv, which visualises surface temperatures in various districts of the capital using satellite imagery.

The study found that it is currently hottest on the left bank of Kyiv. In particular, in the Darnytskyi and Dniprovskyi districts — in the Sotsmisto neighbourhood, near Darnytsia railway station, and in Poznyaky. In some locations, the air temperature can reach over +45…+47°C.

There are also areas where the temperature difference can exceed 10°C. These include: Zvirynets (33°C) and Poznyaki (45°C), Syrets (32°C) — Podil (46°C), VDNG (34°C) and the Minsky housing estate (45°C), Demiivka (34°C) — Troieshchyna (44°C).

Among the reasons for such a marked difference in temperature are heat islands, which arise due to the small number of green spaces and dense development. Roofs and roads heat up more intensely and more quickly than grass and trees. The result is stifling heat, sweltering conditions and an uncomfortable quality of life.

Up-to-date data on surface temperatures in specific districts of Kyiv can be found on the Heat Map via the link.

On 30 June, it was reported that a heatwave was moving eastwards across Europe – red alerts have been issued in several countries.
