A new prime minister has been appointed in Moldova
This is according to Reuters.
Who is now leading the Moldovan government?
Vasile Tofan, 44, is a senior partner at the investment firm Horizon Capital. During the 2024 presidential election, he supported Maia Sandu, and in the 2025 parliamentary election, he supported her party, Action and Solidarity (PAS).
His predecessor, Alexandru Munteanu, announced his resignation in early July, explaining that he could no longer carry out his duties in accordance with his own convictions. He did not give any further reasons.
What goals has the new prime minister set?
Following his appointment, Tofan outlined three main priorities for his work: restoring public confidence in the government, improving the business environment, and continuing the country’s European integration.
According to him, the government intends to conclude the negotiation process with the European Union and sign an agreement on Moldova’s accession to the EU by the end of 2028.
A course towards Europe
Moldova, which borders Ukraine and Romania, has been pursuing a course of rapprochement with the European Union for several years. At the same time, the country’s political life has traditionally been characterised by competition between pro-European forces and politicians who advocate closer relations with Russia.
Maia Sandu thanked Alexandru Munteanu for his work as Prime Minister and highlighted his contribution to the implementation of important reforms.
