The Polish PiS party has spoken out against Ukraine’s accession to the EU
The initiative was announced by PiS MP Przemysław Czarnek on his page on the social media platform X.
What resolution is the party proposing?
The document calls on the Polish government to adopt a firm stance during discussions on Ukraine’s European integration.
According to the authors of the initiative, Warsaw should not agree to the further development of the negotiation process whilst issues of historical memory relating to the Volhynia tragedy remain unresolved between the two countries.
Przemysław Czarnek also stated that, in his view, a country which takes a different approach to assessing these historical events should not become a member of the European Union.
This is not the first time such statements have been made within PiS
The issue of historical memory has been raised on numerous occasions in statements by the leadership of Law and Justice. Previously, the party’s leader, Jarosław Kaczyński, stated that, in his view, support for Ukraine’s accession to the EU was impossible without Kyiv revising its approach to honouring figures from the OUN and UPA.
At the same time, he emphasised that it was Poland which, following the outbreak of full-scale war, became one of Ukraine’s main allies, providing extensive military, humanitarian and diplomatic assistance. According to Kaczyński, Mateusz Morawiecki’s government played a key role in supporting Kyiv during the first months of the Russian invasion.
