A tragedy has occurred in the Bolhrad district of the Odesa region — a little boy, not yet two years old, has died. The child went missing from the yard whilst the adults were busy with household chores, and was later found in a pond

This was reported by the Bolhrad District Police Department in the Odesa region.

The tragedy occurred on the evening of 12 June in one of the villages in the Budzhak community. According to preliminary information from the police, the family had travelled from another region to visit the grandfather. At some point, the adults were busy with household chores and lost sight of the child. The boy wandered out of the yard on his own.

They searched for the child for almost an hour

The parents told the police that they had noticed their son was missing within a few minutes and had started looking for him. Local residents also joined the search. In less than an hour, the boy was found in a river flowing near the place where the family had been. Unfortunately, by the time he was found, the child was already showing no signs of life. The boy’s body was sent for a post-mortem examination to establish the exact cause of death.

The police have opened an investigation

Investigators, under the procedural supervision of the Bolhrad District Prosecutor’s Office, have entered the details into the Unified Register of Pre-trial Investigations under the section on intentional homicide, marked as an ‘accident’. This classification is standard procedure during the investigation of a child’s death. Law enforcement officers are establishing all the circumstances of the tragedy. The police noted that the family had not previously been on any preventive registers and had not come to the attention of the authorities. Law enforcement officers have once again urged adults not to leave young children unattended, especially near bodies of water, and to contact the police immediately if a child goes missing.
