Princess Bajrakitiyabha of Thailand has died at the age of 47 after spending more than three years in a coma due to complications from a mycoplasma infection. The eldest daughter of King Rama X was known for her advocacy for women’s rights and her efforts to reform the justice system

This is according to Euronews.

The princess, often referred to in Thailand as Princess Pa, had been in a coma since December 2022 following a sudden deterioration in her health. According to the royal court, she had a mycoplasma infection, which led to serious complications. Despite treatment, Bajrakitiabha’s condition deteriorated due to an uncontrolled infection and the failure of vital organs. She was placed on machines to support her lung and kidney functions.

Thailand has announced the princess’s passing

Princess Bajrakitiabha’s body will lie in state at the Grand Palace in Bangkok. The funeral will be held with the highest honours in accordance with royal traditions. Thailand’s Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul described the princess’s death as a great loss for the country. He noted that her work in the fields of justice, equality and helping people will remain an important part of Thailand’s legacy.

What Princess Bajrakitiabha was known for

Bajrakitiyabha studied law at Thammasat University in Thailand and also obtained a Master’s degree and a Doctor of Law from Cornell University in the US. She devoted much of her work to reforming the justice system, defending women’s rights, combating domestic violence and improving conditions for women in prisons. It was thanks to her work that the UN General Assembly adopted the so-called ‘Bangkok Rules’ – standards for the treatment of women prisoners. The Princess also worked at the Permanent Mission of Thailand to the UN in New York, served as a public prosecutor, and held the post of Thai Ambassador to Austria from 2012 to 2014. Upon her return to her homeland, she continued to work on issues of criminal justice and social reform. At Chulalongkorn Hospital in Bangkok, where the princess was being treated, people gathered to pay their respects.
