Ukrainian world boxing champion Oleksandr Usyk met with US President Donald Trump at the White House on 12 June. The athlete’s visit has sparked debate among Ukrainians — some believe that such meetings could help draw Washington’s attention to Ukraine

This was reported by Slovo i Dilo.

A photo of the meeting between Usyk and Trump was posted on social media by Margo Martin, the US President’s communications adviser. In the photo, the Ukrainian world heavyweight boxing champion and the US president are seen shaking hands in the Oval Office. Social media users noted that the image resembles the traditional ‘stare-down’ between boxers before a fight.

What Ukrainians think about the meeting between Usyk and Trump

According to a poll of Radio NV listeners, 27% of respondents believe that the Ukrainian athlete’s meeting with Trump could have helped strengthen the US president’s support for Ukraine. At the same time, the majority of those surveyed — 60% — stated that such contacts should remain the preserve of professional diplomats. A further 13% of respondents consider the meeting risky in light of certain previous statements made by Usyk.

Usyk had previously appealed to Trump regarding the war in Ukraine

Details of the conversation between Usyk and Trump have not yet been disclosed. Previously, the Ukrainian boxer had repeatedly spoken publicly about Russia’s war against Ukraine and appealed to Donald Trump to visit Ukraine. Oleksandr Usyk remains one of the most famous Ukrainian athletes in the world and uses international platforms to draw attention to the situation in Ukraine.
