Apple has released iOS 26.5: why this update is important for all iPhone and Mac users
Apple has announced this.
A new level of privacy and security
The most anticipated new feature in version 26.5 is full support for end-to-end encryption for the RCS standard. This is a historic moment for the Apple ecosystem, as messaging between iPhone and Android users (the so-called ‘green bubbles’) now receives the same level of protection that was previously only available within iMessage.
The feature is currently in beta and available to a limited number of mobile operators, but Apple promises to expand support in the near future.
Users will be able to easily check the security status: if a chat is encrypted, a padlock icon will appear in the Messages app. In addition, the update includes dozens of security patches that address vulnerabilities found in previous versions of the systems.
What updates has macOS Tahoe received?
For Mac owners, version 26.5 marks the latest stage in the development of the Tahoe system. The most noticeable change is the Liquid Glass visual style. The developers have moved away from flat elements in favour of semi-transparent, glossy surfaces that adapt their colour to the content beneath them.
Spotlight has also undergone fundamental changes. It is now not just a search bar, but an intelligent control centre. Users can now perform complex actions without opening the relevant apps. For example, you can create a calendar event, send an email or manage the clipboard directly via the Spotlight interface.
Ecosystem and new connectivity features
The update also deepens integration between devices through enhanced Continuity features. The Mac now finally has a full-fledged ‘Phone’ app, allowing you to answer calls, check voicemail and use the intelligent Call Screening spam filtering system.
What’s more, the Hold Assist feature means you don’t have to listen to music whilst on hold – the system will notify you when the operator is ready to take your call.
For gamers, Apple has prepared an updated Games app and Metal 4 technology, which improves graphics and performance in demanding games. A low-power mode has also been introduced, specially optimised for long gaming sessions on the MacBook.
End of support for Intel
An important piece of news for owners of older computer models is the confirmation that macOS 26 Tahoe is the final system for devices based on Intel processors.
From next year onwards, macOS 27 will support only Apple-made chips (the M-series). Although version 26.5 still works on certain 2019–2020 Intel Mac models, these are already deprived of access to Apple Intelligence features.
It is also expected that at WWDC, taking place this June, the company will unveil an updated Siri based on Google’s Gemini language models and give users the option to choose third-party AI models for working with text and images directly within the operating system.
