US nuclear submarine arrives in South Korea to replenish supplies
The USS Greeneville nuclear-powered submarine arrived at the Busan Naval Base on 23 December for resupply and crew rest. This was reported by the South Korean Navy, Yonhap reports.
The USS Greeneville is a Los Angeles-class nuclear-powered attack submarine. The base in Busan is located about 330 kilometres southeast of Seoul. According to the Korean military, the visit is aimed at strengthening interaction and defence cooperation between the two countries.
This is the fourth visit of the USS Greeneville to South Korea and the first visit of a US nuclear-powered submarine since President Lee Jae-myung took office in June. The previous visit of this class of submarine took place in February, when the USS Alexandria visited the base.
Seoul noted that such visits are part of regular military cooperation with the United States. At the same time, North Korea criticised the arrival of the submarine, accusing Washington of neglecting security issues and saying it was ready to respond.
