Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has stated that Ukraine is seeking ways to ease tensions in its relations with Warsaw. According to him, this is indicated by signals following talks between the two countries’ foreign ministers

This is according to Reuters.

What Tusk said following the talks between Ukraine and Poland

According to the Polish Prime Minister, positive signals emerged following a meeting in Warsaw between Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga and Poland’s Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski.

“I do not know the outcome of the meeting, but I have indications that the Ukrainian side is looking for ways to ease tensions,” said Tusk.

Radosław Sikorski himself declined to disclose details of the talks, noting that diplomacy requires restraint.

Andriy Sybiga, however, reported that he had proposed a package of anti-crisis measures to the Polish side. In particular, these include organising a meeting of historians and involving representatives of the churches in the dialogue between the two countries. At the same time, the Ukrainian minister emphasised that Ukraine respects the history of other nations and expects the same attitude towards its own history.

Tusk referred to historical disputes and Ukraine’s accession to the EU

Donald Tusk stated that historical issues remain important for Polish-Ukrainian relations and are significant in the context of Ukraine’s European integration.

“There can be no European community without reconciliation, and reconciliation is impossible without coming to terms with a complex history,” he said.

The Prime Minister also announced that he would ask the Polish delegation at the forthcoming NATO summit to approach new financial commitments regarding Ukraine with caution. According to him, this is not due to a reluctance to support Kyiv, but to the need to fund the defence of Poland’s and the European Union’s eastern border.

Relations between Kyiv and Warsaw have recently become strained following Polish President Karol Nawrocki’s decision to strip Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Poland’s highest state honour. The Polish side cited the decision to award an honorary title in honour of the Heroes of the UPA to one of the Ukrainian military units as the reason.
