Britain plans to limit the duration of refugees' stay
UK Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood will announce radical changes to the asylum system next week. These will include proposals to limit refugees' stay in the country, reports Bloomberg.
It is expected that Mahmood will promise to "do whatever is necessary" to restore control over Britain's borders.
Additionally, according to Bloomberg sources, it is expected that the minister will label tens of thousands of illegal migrants who cross the Channel each year, or people overstaying their visas, as "malefactors abusing the system".
It is noted that since the Labour Party came to power, the Home Office has deported or expelled nearly 50,000 illegal immigrants, which is 23% more than in the previous 16 months.
However, the UK Home Secretary aims to more clearly communicate to those arriving from safe countries such as France that they should not undertake the journey.
Sources close to Mahmood have reported that the UK Home Office will focus more closely on countries like Denmark, where the number of asylum seekers has decreased after it became more difficult for them to obtain legal residence in the country.
According to sources, a group of officials visited Copenhagen last week to learn about the Danish approach.
The protection currently provided to refugees on a permanent basis will be time-limited, and their immigration status will be subject to regular review. People will be expelled as soon as their country of origin is deemed safe.
Mahmood is expected to say that the "crisis" at the border has "got out of control," creating pressure on communities and being unfair to hardworking, tax-paying Britons.
