‘This is not peace, but a lull before the storm’: Ahmed Zakayev on Trump’s initiatives regarding Ukraine
This was reported by TSN, citing a broadcast on Espreso
Commenting on the initiatives of Donald Trump’s administration, the politician stressed that the settlement format currently being proposed to Kyiv primarily serves Moscow’s interests. Zakayev is convinced that pressure is being exerted on Ukraine to force it to accept terms that will give the aggressor the necessary time to replenish its resources and regroup its troops.
“This is not peace, but a pause before a new war,” the leader of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria stressed. He noted that the scenario of “freezing” the conflict without a real weakening of Putin’s regime is a strategic mistake. His own experience of the Chechen wars has taught him that Russia views any peace agreements solely as a tactical respite to prepare for the next strike. According to Zakayev, without full NATO membership or similar security mechanisms, any ‘peace plan’ will remain merely an illusion of calm, and a new round of aggression will be a matter of time.
What is known about Akhmed Zakayev
Ahmed Khalidovich Zakayev was born on 26 April 1959. Within the political hierarchy of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria, he rose through the ranks from Minister of Culture to Deputy Prime Minister and Head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and since November 2007 has headed the Cabinet of Ministers of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria in exile. Holding the rank of brigadier general, he was an active participant in the defence of the republic during both Chechen wars.
Since 2001, the Russian Federation has placed Zakayev on an international wanted list, levelling charges that Ukraine and Western countries regard as politically motivated. A key moment in his international status came in 2003, when a court in London officially refused the Russian Federation’s request for his extradition. Judge Timothy Workman acknowledged at the time that the case against the politician had political overtones, and that the evidence presented by Moscow had been obtained under duress. That same year, the UK Home Office granted Ahmed Zakayev political asylum. Zakayev is an active speaker for the Forum of Free Post-Russian States and has been in Ukraine since 2022, supporting the resistance to the Russian invasion.
