OpenAI has announced a new ‘Trusted Contact’ feature — ChatGPT will notify the user’s loved ones if it detects suicidal thoughts.

TechCrunch reports this, citing OpenAI’s press office.

Users will be able to designate a close friend or family member as a trusted contact. If they mention self-harm in the chat, ChatGPT will suggest contacting the chosen contact — the trusted contact will receive the same notification.

Notifications will be sent either by email, within the app, or via text message. To protect privacy, they will not include details of the chat conversation.

Previously, OpenAI restricted ChatGPT’s responses to users whom the system deems to be minors. This decision was made following a lawsuit from the family of a 16-year-old teenager who took his own life after several months of communicating with the chatbot.
