Church holiday on 2 July 2026: what is celebrated, traditions, superstitions and taboos
According to the new church calendar, on 2 July the Orthodox Church commemorates the Deposition of the Holy Robe of the Most Holy Mother of God at Blachernae — one of the most revered events of the church year.
According to church tradition, the relic was found in 471 in Nazareth. The Robe of the Most Holy Mother of God had been kept by a devout Jewish family and, according to tradition, had been entrusted to them whilst the Virgin Mary was still alive. The relic was later transported to Constantinople, where it was placed in the Church of Blachernae.
Numerous miracles are associated with this relic. One of the most famous is said to be the saving of Constantinople during the siege of 860. According to church tradition, after prayers were said before the robe, the siege was lifted, and Prince Askold, together with his wife, converted to Christianity.
At various times in history, the relic was transferred to the Church of Saint Sophia to protect it from danger. Following its return to the Church of Blachernae on 2 July, this date became the annual day of ecclesiastical commemoration of the Deposition of the Holy Robe of the Most Holy Mother of God.
According to the old church calendar, this day honours Saint Jude the Apostle — one of the Twelve Apostles, whom church tradition refers to as the Lord’s brother.
What people pray for on this feast day
On the day of the Deposition of the Holy Robe of the Most Holy Mother of God, the faithful ask the Mother of God for protection from misfortune and danger, peace, family well-being, good health, healing from illness and help in life’s difficulties.
In popular tradition, this day is known as Berehynia. The image of Berehynia stems from ancient Slavic beliefs, in which she was regarded as the patroness of the earth, the family and prosperity. Over time, these folk beliefs became intertwined with the Christian veneration of the Virgin Mary, who came to be seen as the protector of women, the family and the home.
What to do on 2 July
The birch tree is traditionally regarded as the symbol of the day. According to folk customs, women and girls would come to the tree, bow and ask for good health, happiness in love, family well-being and help with everyday matters.
Particular importance was attached on this day to bringing matters already begun to a conclusion. It was believed that Berehynia helps to see one’s plans through to the end, so it is best not to leave important matters unfinished.
There was also a folk ritual for improving one’s health. At midday, people would wash their faces with cool, clean water, after which they would dry themselves with an embroidered towel. According to popular belief, this ritual gave people strength and helped rid them of ailments.
What not to do on 2 July
The Church urges people to avoid quarrels, anger, slander, greed, envy and despair on this day. It is important to show mercy and not to refuse help to those in need, as good deeds are considered particularly important.
Folk tradition also warned against laziness. It was believed that anyone who spent the day idling might lose their good fortune, and that disorder and financial difficulties would take root in the home for a long time.
It was not recommended to set off on a long journey or plan a move. There was also a ban on cutting down birch trees or breaking their branches.
