Defence forces have struck an oil refinery in the Nizhny Novgorod region and a number of Russian military facilities
On the night of 2 July, units of the Ukrainian Defence Forces struck the ‘Lukoil-Nizhny Novgorodnaftorgsintez’ oil refinery in the town of Kstovo, Nizhny Novgorod Oblast, Russian Federation.
According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, a direct hit followed by a fire was recorded on the plant’s premises. Preliminary information suggests that the AVT-6 primary oil refining unit was hit. The extent of the damage is being assessed.
This refinery is one of the largest oil refining enterprises in the Russian Federation. Its design capacity is approximately 17 million tonnes of crude oil per year. The plant produces motor petrol, diesel and aviation fuel, lubricants and other products used, in particular, to meet the needs of the Russian Federation’s armed forces.
Gleb Nikitin, Governor of the Nizhny Novgorod Region, stated that the region was attacked overnight by around three dozen Ukrainian drones. According to him, falling debris caused damage to one industrial facility and several residential buildings. There are also reports of one fatality and four people injured.
In addition to the strike on the oil refinery, the Defence Forces also struck a Russian military drone depot in the Kamianka area of Zaporizhzhia Oblast.
A strike was also carried out on a railway bridge across the Siverskyi Donets River near Stanytsia Luhanska. This facility is used by Russian forces for logistics and the movement of personnel, weapons and supplies.
In addition, a Russian command and observation post in the Vilshana area of the Kharkiv region was struck.
