Church holiday on 22 May 2026: what not to do
On 22 May, according to the Orthodox calendar, Saint Basilisk the Martyr is commemorated.
According to church tradition, he lived at the turn of the 3rd and 4th centuries, during the period of persecution of Christians in the Roman Empire.
Vasilisk was the nephew of the Holy Great Martyr Theodore Tyron. From a young age, he chose the path of serving God, distinguishing himself through prayer, self-restraint and devotion to the Christian community.
He supported the faithful during times of persecution and remained an example of spiritual fortitude to them.
What is known about the martyr Basilisk
During another wave of persecution, Basilisk was arrested.
He was forced to renounce the Christian faith and offer sacrifices to pagan gods, but he refused.
According to tradition, the saint was held in prison, where he endured great suffering, but did not renounce Christ and continued to pray.
Vasilisk’s final trial took place in the city of Comana in Asia Minor. There he was again given the opportunity to renounce his faith, but he remained faithful to Christ.
According to church tradition, Basil was executed by beheading or by another method used at that time for those sentenced to death.
What people pray to the saint for
