On 9 July 2026 (New Style), the faithful commemorate the Holy Martyr Pankratius, Bishop of Tavromenia. According to the Old Style, this feast day falls on 22 July.
According to church tradition, Pankratius was born in Antioch during the earthly life of Jesus Christ. In his youth, he travelled with his father to Jerusalem, where he met the Apostle Peter. After the death of his parents, Pankratius chose a life of solitude in the Pontic Mountains, where he spent his time in prayer.
Later, the Apostle Peter met him again and introduced him to the Apostle Paul, who was in Cilicia. Pankratius was consecrated as Bishop of the city of Tauromenium in Sicily. There he built a church, preached Christianity and converted many local people to the faith.
The saint died a martyr’s death: pagans stoned him to death for preaching the Gospel. Today, the relics of Saint Pancratius are kept in Rome.

Why was the day called ‘Berry Day’ or ‘Blueberry Day’?
In the folk calendar, 9 July is known as ‘Yagidnik’ or ‘Chornychnik’. It was at this time of year that blueberries ripened in the forests; they have long been considered one of the most beneficial berries.
Our ancestors believed that on this day, blueberries possessed special powers. They were eaten fresh, dried for the winter, made into jam, and used to prepare fruit drinks, fruit jellies, pies and dumplings.
It was believed that blueberries helped with ailments of the eyes, stomach, liver and joints, as well as colds. According to tradition, the more blueberries one ate on 9 July, the more health, beauty and good fortune one would gain.
That is why people were advised to be sure to eat blueberries or a dish containing them on this day — for example, dumplings, a pie or a berry drink.
What else was done on 9 July
At this time, people also began harvesting the first cucumbers of the new crop. According to folk custom, the youngest member of the family was to taste the first cucumber. It was believed that this would ensure a bountiful cucumber harvest.
9 July was also considered a favourable day for moving house. According to popular belief, if you moved to a new place on this very day, life there would be peaceful and happy.
What not to do on 9 July
The Church reminds us that on this day one should not quarrel, be envious, be lazy, use foul language, gossip, be greedy, or refuse to help those in need.
According to folk beliefs, it was not advisable to lend money on 9 July. It was believed that, along with the money, one might be giving away one’s own good fortune. If it felt awkward to refuse someone, it was better to postpone the loan until another day.
Also, people did not start any new important undertakings on this day. It was widely believed that they might not yield the desired result.
Arguments with relatives and parents were considered particularly undesirable. According to folk wisdom, a conflict that began on 9 July could drag on for a long time.

If lilies and water lilies close up in the middle of the day, it will rain soon.
If fish leap out of the water, it will also rain.
If there are plenty of blueberries, winter will be cold.
