Deputies who voted for Ukraine's independence received special state status
The President of Ukraine has signed a law establishing special state status for members of parliament who participated in the proclamation of Ukraine's independence. This was reported by the press service of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine.
This refers to the Law of Ukraine "On the Status of the Founder of the Modern State of Ukraine — People's Deputy" No. 4700-IX, signed on 9 March.
The document defines a special status for deputies of the Verkhovna Rada of the Ukrainian SSR who supported the adoption of the Declaration of State Sovereignty of Ukraine, the Act of Declaration of Independence of Ukraine or the relevant parliamentary resolution on the declaration of independence.
First Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Economic Development and President of the Association of People's Deputies of Ukraine Serhiy Taruta noted that the adoption of this law is an important step towards historical justice and official recognition of the role of deputies of the first convocation who contributed to the restoration of independent Ukrainian statehood.
According to him, honouring the founders of the state is a common practice in many countries around the world, and now Ukraine is joining this tradition.
Taruta also thanked everyone who contributed to the adoption of the law, emphasising that this decision is a sign of respect for the people who stood at the origins of the modern Ukrainian state.
