The fate of temporary protection for Ukrainians in the EU will be decided by the end of May
This has been reported by sources at *European Truth*.
According to diplomatic sources, the European Commission plans to present a concrete proposal regarding the future status of Ukrainians by the end of May 2026. Several key scenarios are currently under consideration: ranging from another one-year extension of temporary protection to the introduction of a completely new special status. An option to transfer Ukrainian citizens to the general conditions for obtaining residence permits, which apply in each individual EU country, is also being discussed.
The option of extending temporary protection until March 2028 remains a priority, given the ongoing hostilities. The directive, introduced back in March 2022, has proven its effectiveness by providing Ukrainians with access to the labour market, education and healthcare without placing an excessive burden on national systems. However, European officials are seeking to create a more sustainable model for the stay of our citizens within the Union.
The final decision will depend on a consensus among all EU member states during the official consideration of proposals in Brussels. For Ukrainians abroad, this means a period of waiting for new rules that will determine their residence rights and social guarantees for the coming years. The European community emphasises the importance of a unified approach to avoid discrepancies in the migration rules of different countries
