Buying an electric vehicle (EV) in 2026 will no longer be a luxury. Despite the technology’s premium image, leading car manufacturers have launched mid-range models that combine practicality with an affordable price

Experts at GO Banking Rates have analysed the market and identified five brands whose electric cars are ideal for those on a tight budget

Chevrolet: lowest cost per mile

The brand remains the leader in the budget segment.

  • Chevy Bolt EV: starting price — $27,600 (range of 421 km).

  • Equinox EV: from $34,995 with a range of up to 513 km. Chevrolet has managed to combine practicality with a high level of safety.

Hyundai: the ideal family crossover The Kona Electric, priced from $32,975, offers the space of an SUV and a range of 420 km. This is one of the lowest entry prices in the SUV segment for a modern family.

Tesla: reliability and resale value Although the brand is associated with premium vehicles, the Tesla Model 3 at $38,630 (516 km range) is an extremely sound investment. Its high resale value on the second-hand market makes purchasing it economically viable in the long term.

Nissan: time-tested affordability The classic Nissan Leaf offers entry into the world of electric cars for just $29,990. Depending on the trim level, the range is between 235 and 485 km, backed by the model’s long history of reliability.

Kia: the ambitious new EV4 Kia’s strategy for 2026 is based on affordability. The new EV4, with an estimated price of $39,000 and a range of up to 530 km, has been designed specifically for the mass market to attract buyers who were previously hesitant about switching to electric.
