Ekrem Imamoglu and three other figures in Turkey have been charged with espionage
In Turkey, as part of an espionage investigation, an indictment has been prepared against four suspects, including former Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu. This was reported by the Turkish state television channel TRT Haber, citing the Istanbul Chief Prosecutor's Office.
According to the case file, the indictment also concerns Hüseyin Gün, Nejat Özkan and Merdan Yanardaş. All four are accused of political espionage. According to the investigation, the alleged actions took place between 2019 and 2025.
The prosecutor's office is asking the court to sentence each of the suspects to 15 to 20 years in prison. The indictment was prepared as part of a broader criminal case in which Imamoglu was previously arrested and subsequently removed from office as mayor of Istanbul.
The prepared materials have been sent for consideration to the Istanbul High Criminal Court, which is to decide on the acceptance of the indictment and further consideration of the case.
