Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp have experienced a major outage
On Friday, 12 June, Meta’s services experienced a major technical outage. Users reported issues with Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, WhatsApp and Threads.
The majority of complaints were regarding Facebook and Instagram. As of 10:11 am US Eastern Time, Downdetector had recorded over 62,000 reports of issues with Facebook and over 8,000 with Instagram.
What happened to Facebook
According to monitoring services, the Facebook outage began at around 16:20 Kyiv time.
Users most frequently complained about the site being completely inaccessible, login issues and server error messages.
According to Down for Everyone or Just Me, 58% of complaints concerned Facebook being completely inaccessible. A further 22% of reports were related to login issues, and 20% to a general server error.
Which Meta services were affected by the outage
Problems were not limited to Facebook. Reports of outages also came from users of Instagram, Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp and Threads.
Business Insider reports that the outages affected Meta’s main platforms, with users encountering login errors and service disruptions. The publication also notes that Meta’s status dashboard indicated significant disruptions to some business services, including Ads Manager and the Messenger API.
What Meta said
Meta spokesperson Andy Stone confirmed the issue on social media platform X and stated that the company was working to resolve it. At the time of reporting, the company had not specified the cause of the outage.
According to Reuters, Meta did not provide a detailed explanation of the causes of the outage and did not specify the exact time when services would be fully restored.
How widespread was the outage
The outage was global in nature. Reports of problems came from users in various countries.
According to monitoring data, some users were unable to log in, some received error messages, and in certain regions the services were completely unavailable.
Barron’s also reports that the issues affected Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger and Facebook Ads Manager. The surge in complaints began around 9.30 am US Eastern Time.
Previous outages
According to monitoring services, this is not the first major outage affecting Facebook in June 2026.
The previous large-scale technical outage, which lasted around 45 minutes, was recorded on 3 June.
