Final destination. A cruise ship on which an hantavirus outbreak has occurred is arriving in Rotterdam
The cruise ship MV Hondius, on board which an outbreak of hantavirus was detected
The cruise ship MV Hondius, on board which an outbreak of hantavirus has been detected, is due to arrive today, 18 May, at the Dutch port of Rotterdam. This is the final port of call on the ship’s itinerary, where it is scheduled to undergo a full disinfection.

This is according to Reuters.

The Dutch authorities have already imposed quarantine measures on the 25 crew members and two medical staff who remain on board.

Special quarantine centres have been prepared for those crew members who are not Dutch nationals. However, it is not yet known whether they will remain in isolation for the full recommended 42-day period.

As Reuters notes, the ship’s arrival has caused concern among local residents. In comments to the agency, some Dutch people shared fears that people from the ship might breach quarantine rules. However, they added that they do not expect a new pandemic.

It should be noted that the Andes hantavirus, which was found on board the MV Hondius, has not been detected or is not circulating in Ukraine. At the same time, here, as in other European countries, other types of hantaviruses are recorded, associated mainly with natural reservoirs among rodents.

It should be noted that earlier, Health Minister Viktor Lyashko stated that Ukraine is a natural reservoir for the circulation of hantaviruses.
